Whispers of the past | 2023

Medium: Hand-felted merino wool and hand-embroidered stitching

Dimensions: 6.7 x 3.2 ft

This tactile piece traces the global journey of wool, collected from various regions, cleaned and processed primarily in Eastern Asia, and then returned—now blended with wool from other origins—for further refinement. This artwork highlights the complex, intertwined pathways of global trade, past and present. Broken chain stitches trace the colonial trade routes connecting Europe to modern Asia and South Asia, drawn from archival maps accessed at the British Library. Through this process of counter-mapping, the artwork challenges the historical and present-day complexities of global trade networks.
